Slavery was quite common throughout the Bible times.

Mosaic covenant allowed slavery (Lev. 25:35).

Greek mentality –

Early Roman law –

A. Why does Paul not condemn it?

B. Paul applies the gospel to this institution in order to transform it by peaceful means. In addition to Col. 3:22-25 and Eph. 6:5-9, read 1 Tim. 6:1-2; Titus 2:9-10. Paul definitely understands the plight of slaves and encourages them to seek freedom if possible (1 Cor. 7:20-24).

C. In the body of Christ there is no class distinction between slave and freeman, Gal. 3:28. They are spiritual equals.. 1Cor. 7:22 For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord’s freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ’s slave.
