Do Not Test the LORD

Intro

A. LOCATION OF THE TEMPTATION (Matthew 4:5).

1. “the pinnacle of the temple” –

B. THE DEVIL’S TEMPTATION (Matthew 4:6).

1. Satan again calls Jesus “the Son of God”.

2. Challenge: “Throw Yourself down” –

3. Confirmation: Ps. 91.

a. Satan misquotes the text.

b. Satan misinterprets the text.

c. Satan misapplies the text.

C. CHRIST’S TRIUMPH OVER THE TEMPTATION (Matthew 4:7).

1. Again Christ uses the Word to defeat Satan’s temptation.

2. Context of Deut. 6:16. Cf. Ex. 17:2-7

3. Both Israel and Jesus were tempted to test God.

D. LESSONS

1. Use the Scriptures correctly.

2. Don’t put God to the test.

Conclusion

1. Learn to trust God, and not to test Him.

2. Do not presume on the Father’s protection when we deliberately sin.

3. Use the Bible to resist temptations.
