Intro
A. THE COMMAND OF GOD.
1) For what? “In everything give thanks for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thess. 5:18).
2) When? Eph. 5:20 “always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father.”
3) How? “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph. 5:20).
4) Why?
a) “This is God’s will for you”. 1 Thess. 5:18
b) The Sin of ingratitude.
B. THE CHARACTER OF GOD.
1. God is sovereign. Job 42:2; Psa. 103:19; Psa. 115:3; Is. 14:27; Is. 46:10; Dan. 4:35; Eph. 1:11. We can give thanks in all things because God is sovereign in all things; we can give thanks at all times because God is sovereign at all times.
a) Sovereign over your blessings: 1:17;
b) Sovereign over your trials: 45:7; Lam. 3:38; Eccl. 7:14; 2 Cor. 12:7; Job 1:21; 2:10. God makes no mistakes: Deut. 29:29; Isa. 55:8-9.
c) Sovereign over people: 21:1; Gen. 45:8; 50:20; Acts 4:27-28.
2. God is wise. Ps. 147:5; Rom. 11:33; Prov. 3:19.
3. God is loving. Rom. 8:35, 37; 5:8; Ps. 103:11; Lam. 3:22; Isa. 54:10.
C. THE COMMITMENT OF GOD.
1. To our good. Rom. 8:28; Heb. 12:10; Ps. 119:71.
2. To His glory. Rom. 11:36; Isa. 6:3; Ps. 19:1; Isa. 42:8; Jn. 9:3; 11:4.
