God and Time
Intro
A. GOD’S ETERNAL NATURE (2 Peter 3:8).
1. Believers must not forget God’s eternal nature.
2. This relates to God’s character, not a literal millennium.
B. GOD’S REDEMPTIVE PURPOSE (2 Peter 3:9).
1. Arminian view: God desires to save everyone without exception. Free will.
a. Theological problems:
b. Problems with the Arminian view.
2. Calvinist view #1 - God desires to save all but only decrees to save the elect.
3. What does the word “wishing/willing” mean?
boulomai - 37 times in the NT; 7 times used of God (Mt. 11:27; Lk. 10:22; 22:42; 1 Cor. 12:11; Heb. 6:17; Jas. 1:18).
4. Calvinist view #2 - The elect of God are in view, not the human race.
a. Consistent with the meaning of “willing.”
b. Who is Peter addressing?
c. Repentance is a gift of God. Acts 5:31; 11:18; 2 Tim. 2:25.
d. Some of the elect have not yet come to faith. 2 Tim. 2:10.
