2 Kings 1
The Folly of not seeking the LORD
INTRO
- THE LORD IS A JEALOUS GOD (vv. 1-4).
- Ahaziah falls through the lattice (vv. 1-2).
- Ahaziah seeks the god Baal-zebub (v. 2).
1) The meaning of Baal-zebub – “lord of the flies”.
2) The significance of Ekron –
3) Ahaziah should have sought the Lord.
- Elijah brings a word of doom to the king (vv. 3-4).
Is there no God in Israel?
You shall surely die!
- The LORD is a jealous God.
1) Ex. 20:1-6; 34:14.
2) IDOL = “Whatever is worshiped ahead of, instead of, or alongside God.” An idol is anything other than the Lord that we turn to first in any given circumstance of life.
3) God’s jealousy brings judgment.
4) God’s jealousy brings discipline for God’s children, heb. 12.
- THE LORD IS A CONSUMING FIRE (vv. 5-12).
- Ahaziah’s hostile response to the message (vv. 9-13a).
- The purpose of the fire:
1) The fire from heaven REVEALS that Yahweh is the only true God.
2) The fire from heaven REVEALS that Elijah is a true prophet of God.
God’s word could not be silenced.
God’s word must not be ridiculed.
God’s word cannot fail.
3) The fire from heaven reveals that God is a consuming fire against idolaters.
4) The fire from heaven protected Elijah from his enemies.
III. THE LORD’S WRATH IS EVANGELISTIC (vv. 13-15).
- The value of humility.
- The importance of holy terror.
CONCLUSION
Our response to this passage is simple: FEAR AND SEEK THE LORD.
