Bogus Religion
INTRO
- JEROBOAM’S PROBLEM (12:25-27).
- His fortification (v. 25).

- His fear (vv. 26-27).
1) General expression of his fear (v. 26).
2) Specific expression of his fear (v. 27).
Jeroboam feared for his kingdom, but also for himself.
What was the threat? Old time religion at Jerusalem will turn the people against me and they will kill me.
- JEROBOAM’S SOLUTION (12:28-33).
- A new religion: two golden calves (v. 28).
- The development of false religion:
1) Consulted with himself? Counselors who agree? (v. 28).
2) Religion of convenience (vv. 28-29). “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem.”

3) Make it similar. (v. 28).
“Behold, your gods, O Israel, that brought you up from the land of Egypt.”
4) Make it different (vv. 28-33).
- a) Two are better than one (v. 28).
- b) Different temples (v. 31).
- c) Different priests (v. 31).
- d) Different feast (v. 32).
- e) Different reason (v. 33).
5) Sadly, it is often successful (v. 30).
