Lead us not into temptation
Intro
A. DO NOT LEAD US INTO TEMPTATION.
- The nature of this temptation.
a. Not “temptation” as an enticement to sin. James 1:13
b. “Temptation” can refer to testing. Genesis 22:1-2; Deuteronomy 8:2, 26
- Temptations expose our inner character.
B. BUT DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE.
- Satan is probably in view.
- “Deliver” – to rescue someone from a fate he cannot escape on his own.
- Jesus is the perfect example of overcoming all temptations. Matthew 4:1-11
- Means of grace to overcome Satan’s temptations.
a. armor of God. Ephesians 6:10-18
b. the sword of the Spirit. 1 John 2:14; Psalms 119:9-11
C. DOXOLOGY
- Almost certainly a later addition.
- Adopt it as your own personal words of praise to God.
D. LESSONS
- We are weaker than we think.
- God is our Keeper. 1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Peter 2:9
