The Destruction of Jericho
Intro
A. THE BATTLE PLAN (Joshua 6:6-20).
1. Instructions given and carried out (Joshua 6:6-16).
a. The centrality of the ark of the covenant (Joshua 6:1-13).
b. 6 days no voices, no shouting, only trumpet sound (Joshua 6:10
2. Instruction on the ban (Joshua 6:17-19).
B. JERICHO’S DESTRUCTION (Joshua 6:20-27).
1. The wall fell down flat (6:20).
2. Destruction of all living (v. 21). PROBLEM.
a. God waited for their sin to be complete Gen. 15:16
b. The Canaanites were not innocent victims. Deut. 18:9-11; Lev. 18:6-25.
c. Israel was to be a holy nation for the worship of God.
d. God has not changed.
3. Rescue of Rahab and her household? (Joshua 6:22-23).
4. Destruction by fire (6:24).
5. The curse of rebuilding Jericho (Joshua 6:26-27). Fulfilled sadly in 1 Kings 16:34.
C. LESSONS
1. Believers must guard ourselves from influences of the world.
2. God has equipped the believer with divinely powerful weapons. 2 Cor. 10:4-5
3. No obstacle, no fortress, no high walls and closed gates that God cannot tear down.
4. Judgment awaits all unbelievers. There is mercy to believers.
Discussion: What lessons can we learn from this event? What is the significance of the ark in the victory over Jericho? How do we reconcile the taking of all human life with the love of God?
