The Healing of Naaman
Intro
- NAAMAN’S LEPROSY (5:1).
Maybe not Hansen’s disease which does not turn the sufferer’s skin “white as snow” (v. 27). Probably some other skin disease, but loathesome enough to cause others to pity him.
- GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY (5:1-8).
1) God sovereign on the battlefield (v. 1).
2) God is sovereign in mercy. In Luke 4:27 Jesus said at Nazareth his hometown, “And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
3) God is sovereign over great trials (vv. 2-8). Captive Jewish girl. She is the key to the story of this chapter for she is the link between Naaman and Elisha. She has been strategically placed by God in this home so she could bear testimony to the prophet’s gifts which sends Naaman on his mission for a cure.
- a) Her tragedy was great.
- b) Her faith was great.
- c) Her heart was great.
God uses little people for great things.
- THE PATHWAY TO GOD’S BLESSING (5:9-14).
1) Humility before the blessing.
- a) Received by a messenger (v. 10).
- b) Told to wash in the Jordan river (v. 10).
- c) Naaman’s angry outburst (vv. 11-12).
(1) Elisha’s method did not meet his expectations (v. 11).
(2) Naaman thought Elisha’s instructions were ridiculous (v. 12).
2) God’s way or the highway.
- a) Naaman could not choose his method of being cured. It was the river or the road.
- b) We are confronted with a similar situation in Christianity.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.
Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.”
3) God alone gives the blessing.
- GOD’S GRACE IS FREE (5:15-27).
1) Naaman a new man (v. 15).
2) Naaman’s gift refused (vv. 16-19).
3) Gehazi’s greed (20-27).
