Solomon’s Kingdom Established
INTRO
- THE KINGDOM IS ESTABLISHED THROUGH OBEDIENCE (2:1-4).
- One of the most important keys to establishing the kingdom is: “Keep”, “walk” according to God’s word “that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn” (v. 3).
- Both knowledge and obedience of the Word is important.
1) Knowledge of the word is important.
2) Yet, knowledge by itself is not enough, we need obedience.
- THE KINGDOM IS ESTABLISHED BY KINDNESS (2:7).
The ministry of Barzillai the Gileadite.
III. THE KINGDOM IS ESTABLISHED THROUGH EXECUTIONS (2:5-46).
David counsels Solomon to settle some old scores. Solomon has one of his own to settle as well.
- Adonijah must be put to death if the kingdom is to be established (2:13-25).
Adonijah lives on in our hearts in the form of the flesh. Some of his characteristics are:
1) He wanted his rights.
2) Pride.
3) Manipulation.
Solomon banishes Adonijah’s chosen priest, Abiathar in vv. 26-27.
- Joab must be put to death if the kingdom is to be established (2:28-35).
Joab was the commander of the armies of David. A powerful soldier.
1) Our strengths can become liabilities.
2) Joab’s revenge.
3) Joab’s jealousy.
- Shimei must be put to death if the kingdom is to be established (2:36-46).
Shimei threw stones and cursed David when fleeing from Absalom (2 Sam. 16:6-8).
1) Shimei represents a bad mouth.
2) Shimei’s anger.
- PRAISE GOD FOR BENAIAH (vv. 2:25, 34, 46).
- Who is Benaiah? [Benaiah = captain of David’s bodyguard made up of foreign Cherethites and Pelethites; among David’s mighty men, renown among “the thirty”.]
- Benaiah means “Yahweh has built up or established”. Benaiah is a picture of the _____________.
