Spurning God’s Word
INTRO
THE SEIGE OF SAMARIA (20:1-12).
Ahab does not oppose the threat until Ben Hadad ups the annie and says he is taking “whatever is desirable in your eyes” (v. 6).
Ben-hadad’s threat and Ahab’s response.
GOD’S GRACE TO AHAB (20:13-30).
1) Grace is undeserved. Remember 16:30-33.
2) God’s grace comes to Ahab through the prophetic word.
The messages given by the prophets were:
a) Deliverance (v. 13).
b) Preparation (v. 22).
c) Deliverance (v. 28).
Aramean theology –
3) God’s grace is seen in the purpose of these prophetic words.
“that you shall know that I am the LORD” (vv. 13, 28).
Whose benefit is this for?
THE SIN OF KING AHAB (20:31-35).
1) Ahab’s spiritual darkness.
The doctrine of TOTAL INABILITY. 1 Cor. 2:14
2) Ahab’s disobedience (vv. 31-34).
Ben Hadad was “devoted to destruction” (v. 42) but Ahab let him go free (v. 34).
Ahab broke a clear command of God.
3) Ahab’s rebuke and response (vv. 35-43).
a) The prophet’s rebuke (vv. 35-42). Why the request to be struck?
1) A reenactment of Ahab’s sin an object lesson among the prophets.
2) To make his disguise believable. See his words in v. 39.
b) The king was tricked into pronouncing judgment upon himself.
c) Ahab’s response (v. 43).
