From Famine to Feast
Intro
- THE GREAT SEIGE (v. 24).
1) The effect of the great feast of v. 23 has worn off.
2) The Arameans come with a great army and they lay siege to Samaria.
- THE GREAT FAMINE (vv. 25-33)
The siege is the primary cause of the famine. As people began to buy up the last remaining scraps of food the sellers engaged in incredible price gouging.
- donkey’s head = 80 shekels
- ¼ of kab (1/2 pint) of dove’s dung or pigeon manure = 5 shekels
1) Why the cannibalism? – Israel’s sin and disobedience.
See Deut. 28:53-57 = curse of cannibalism on Israel if she sins.
2) Response of the king (vv. 30-33):
- a) The king’s evil plot to kill Elisha.
- b) The king rightfully puts Yahweh behind the calamity (v. 33).
- THE GREAT DELIVERANCE (7:1-20).
1) Elisha’s message (7:1-2).
2) The sound of chariots and horses of a great army (vv. 6-7).
3) The lepers hit the jackpot (v. 8).
4) The lepers become heroes (vv. 9-16).
“We are not doing right. This is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent.”
5) The tragedy to the royal officer (vv. 17-20).
