A. THE MEANING OF ISAIAH’S PROPHECY (Matthew 3:3).
1. Isa. 40:3 and its context.
a. Prophecy of coming judgment and deportation. Isa. 39:6-7.
b. Comfort in the Lord’s promise to come and bring them home. Isa. 40:1f
2. Application to John the Baptist.
3. Matthew and the deity of Christ.
B. THE RESPONSE TO JOHN’S MESSAGE (Matthew 3:5-7a).
1. A large following (Matthew 3:5-6).
2. Many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to John (Matthew 3:7a). WHY?

C. JOHN’S RESPONSE TO THE JEWISH LEADERS (Matthew 3:7b-10).
1. “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” (Matthew 3:7b).
2. “Bear fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matthew 3:8).
3. Abraham cannot save you (Matthew 3:9).
4. Judgment is imminent on fruitless trees (Matthew 3:10).
