Christ’s 1st Temptation
Intro
A. JESUS FASTING FOR 40 DAYS AND NIGHTS (Matthew 4:2).
1. Fasting for communion with God.
2. Then He became hungry. Parallel with Israel in the wilderness, Ex. 16:1-3.
B. THE DEVIL’S TEMPTATION (Matthew 4:3).
1. Satan comes as the “tempter”.
2. Satan does not deny that Jesus is the Son of God.
a. To cast doubt on the Father’s faithful provision for Jesus’ bodily needs.
b. But the end game is to get Jesus to act on His own.
3. Applications:
a. Satan will often use flattery.
b. Satan is a student of our needs.
c. Satan tries to undermine our trust in God’s goodness and provision.
C. JESUS’ TRIUMPH (Matthew 4:4).
1. “IT IS WRITTEN” – Deut. 8:3.
a. Israel’s failure.
b. God’s provision.
2. Application –
a. Don’t make bread our primary focus.
b. Do not run outside the boundaries of God’s Word to meet your needs.
c. TRUST GOD for our daily bread/needs.
d. Stay in the Word.
