2 Peter 2:1
Did Jesus Die for False Teachers?
Intro
A. THE ISSUE STATED.
1. The false teachers deny the Master who bought them.
2. These false teachers will be judged (2 Peter 2:1, 3, etc).
3. The Master bought them is a reference to Christ’s atoning death on the cross.
4. If Christ bought the false teachers then Jesus died for all men, both the saved and the lost.
B. INITIAL OBSERVATIONS
1. The controversy is over the INTENT of the atonement. Universal atonement or a definite atonement?
2. Both views end up saving the exact same people.
3. Both views limit the atonement.
Definite atonement limits the number for whom Christ died.
Unlimited atonement limits the power of the atonement.
C. PROBLEMS WITH UNIVERSAL ATONEMENT
1. Universal atonement believes Christ died to make salvation possible for all men.
2. This denies the clear biblical language of redemption on the cross. Rev. 5:9; Heb. 9:12; 1 Tim. 1:15; Jn. 6:39; Col. 1:21-22; Rom. 5:8-9; Jn. 1:29; 1 Jn. 4:10; 1 Pet. 2:24. A penal, substitutionary sacrifice.
3. To believe that Jesus died for all men and hold to a biblical view of the atonement leads to either universalism, or that one can lose their salvation (which makes God unjust).
a. Owen’s dilemma
b. Double Jeopardy
4. Many texts affirm the limited scope of Christ’s death. Eph. 5:25; Jn. 10:11; Mt. 1:21; Heb. 2:17; Mk. 10:45. Cf. the Passover and Day of Atonement.
D. INTERPRETING 2 PETER 2:1
1. The non-atonement views.
2. Christian Charity View: Mt. 9:12-13; 7:22-23; Jn. 8:54
