Honor the Spirit of Prophecy

Intro

A. DO NOT QUENCH THE SPIRIT (1 Thess. 5:19).

1. “Quench”

2. The ministry of the Holy Spirit.

B. DO NOT DESPISE PROPHESIES (1 Thess. 5:20).

1. The gift of prophecy:

a. The Giver of the gift.

b. Defining the gift.
(1) preaching
(2) charismatic view
(3) miraculous gift whereby God communicates divine revelation to His prophets through the HS in words which are absolutely binding and true.

2. The duration of the gift of prophecy. Continuationists vs. Cessationists.

3. Application: do not despise the ministry of Scripture.

C. EXAMINE EVERYTHING; HOLD TO THE GOOD (1 Thess. 5:21).

1. Examine everything.

a. The blessing of Berean believers.

b. Examine = put to the test to determine genuineness.

2. Embracing the good.

D. ABSTAIN FROM ALL EVIL (1 Thess. 5:22).

1. Abstain.

2. “from every form of evil” –

Conclusion

Discussion Questions: What are ways we can “quench the Spirit” today? How should we “not despise prophetic utterances” today? Why are Berean Christians important in the church? (Acts 17:11). How can we honor the Spirit by honoring His Word? What are some practical ways we can “hold fast” to what is good and abstain from what is evil?
