Intro
A. THE MEMORIAL STONES TAKEN FROM THE JORDAN (Joshua 4:1-14).
1. The LORD speaks, Joshua obeys: 12 stones taken (Joshua 4:1-5).
2. Purpose of the stones: to teach the children (Joshua 4:6-7).
3. Two sets of stones ? (Joshua 4:8-9).
4. The priests carrying the ark are the last to cross (Joshua 4:10-14).
B. THE RETURN OF JORDAN’S FLOOD WATERS (Joshua 4:15-5:1).
1. The LORD speaks, Joshua obeys (Joshua 4:15-18).
a. Joshua 4:16 – “ark of the testimony”
b. Joshua 4:18 – The timing of the water’s return.
2. 10th day of first month, camp at Gilgal (Joshua 4:19-20).
3. Purpose of the stones (Joshua 4:21-24).
a. To teach the children (Joshua 4:21-24).
b. a witness to the world (Joshua 4:24).
c. A memorial to the sons of Israel to fear the LORD forever (Joshua 4:7, 24).
C. THE IMPORTANCE OF MEMORIALS
1. To help us not forget.
2. What memorials do we have today?
a. Lord’s Supper.
b. Word of God.

Things to ponder: Why are memorials important? What biblical memorials do we have today? Are there other memorials (not mentioned in Scripture) that might be profitable for us today? What might be some dangers of memorials or objects used to remember God’s deeds? (Hint: 2 Kings 18:4; transubstantiation)
