Matthew 4:8-11

Satan’s Third temptation

Intro

A. THE LOCATION OF THE TEMPTATION (Matthew 4:8).

1. A very high mountain.   

2. Location is unknown. 

B.  THE TEMPTATION (Matthew 4:8-9).

1. Supernatural vision? (Matthew 4:8).

a. “in a moment of time” – 

b. What we learn about Satan.  

2. Satan claims to be able to give Christ what he just showed Him (9).

 

a. Could Satan really make good on his offer?  

b. Cf. Ps. 2:8; 24:1; 103:19; Dan. 4:17.

3.  The temptation –  The crown without the cross  (Matthew 4:9).   

a. Jesus is promised dominion by the Father.  Dan. 7:13-14; Ps. 2:8.

b. The price tag for this transaction is SIN. 

 

C.  CHRIST’S ANSWER (Matthew 4:10).   

1. Jesus now commands Satan to GO.

2.  Jesus quotes Deut. 6:13; 10:20.

a. Context.

b. Where Israel failed, Christ prevailed.

 

D.  THE BATTLE WON (Matthew 4:11).

1. Satan is dismissed.   

2. Angels are sent to minister to Him.   

 APPLICATIONS

1.  Satan employs visions in tempting us.   

2.  What we see can lead us astray.  

3.  Don’t make the power and glory of this world the goal of your life. 

4. Christ never despised the cross.  

5. The importance of Scripture to the saints when tested.
