Spurning God’s Word
INTRO
- THE SEIGE OF SAMARIA (20:1-12).
Ahab does not oppose the threat until Ben Hadad ups the annie and says he is taking “whatever is desirable in your eyes” (v. 6).
Ben-hadad’s threat and Ahab’s response.
- GOD’S GRACE TO AHAB (20:13-30).
1) Grace is undeserved. Remember 16:30-33.
2) God’s grace comes to Ahab through the prophetic word.
The messages given by the prophets were:
- a) Deliverance (v. 13).
- b) Preparation (v. 22).
- c) Deliverance (v. 28).
Aramean theology -
3) God’s grace is seen in the purpose of these prophetic words.
“that you shall know that I am the LORD” (vv. 13, 28).
Whose benefit is this for?
- THE SIN OF KING AHAB (20:31-35).
1) Ahab’s spiritual darkness.
The doctrine of TOTAL INABILITY. 1 Cor. 2:14
2) Ahab’s disobedience (vv. 31-34).
Ben Hadad was “devoted to destruction” (v. 42) but Ahab let him go free (v. 34).
Ahab broke a clear command of God.
3) Ahab’s rebuke and response (vv. 35-43).
- a) The prophet’s rebuke (vv. 35-42). Why the request to be struck?
1) A reenactment of Ahab’s sin an object lesson among the prophets.
2) To make his disguise believable. See his words in v. 39.
- b) The king was tricked into pronouncing judgment upon himself.
- c) Ahab’s response (v. 43).
