A. GREAT ACTIONS OF VICTORIOUS FAITH (vv. 33-35a).
“conquered kingdoms” –
“performed acts of righteousness” –
“obtained promises” –
“shut the mouths of lions” -
“quenched the power of fire” –
“escaped the edge of the sword” –
“from weakness were made strong” –
“became mighty in war” -
“put foreign armies to flight” -
“women received back their dead by resurrection” -
B. GREAT AFFLICTIONS OF VICTORIOUS FAITH (vv. 35b-38).
1) Their afflictions (vv. 35-38).
v. 35 - “tortured not accepting their release so that they might obtain a better resurrection” -
v. 36 – mockings, scourgings, chains, imprisonment -
v. 37 – stoned, sawn in two, death by sword -
v. 38 - Wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, holes –
2) Their assurance (vv. 35b, 40).
a) better resurrection (v. 35b).
b) “God has provided something better for us” (v. 40).
3) Their assessment (vv. 38-39).
a) “of whom the world was not worthy” –
b) “gained approval through their faith” (11:2, 39).
